JPEG vs. HEIF (HEIC)
iPhone photos are usually saved as HEIF (with the .heic extension). HEIF's strength is its small file size; JPEG's strength is that it opens almost anywhere.
| JPEG | HEIF (HEIC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | .jpg / .jpeg | .heic / .heif |
| File size | Larger | About half (at similar quality) |
| Compatibility | ◎ Almost every device, app and web service | △ Fine on iPhone and Mac (iOS 11 / macOS High Sierra or later); may not open on older devices or some apps and web services |
| iPhone setting name | Most Compatible | High Efficiency (default) |
| Best for | Sending to others, uploading to AI or the web, printing | Storing on iPhone, saving space |
With this app, convert HEIC to JPEG before sending or handing photos to AI and web services, and JPEG to HEIF for storage — after comparing quality and size first. You can choose the iPhone camera's format in Settings > Camera > Formats.

HEIF compresses more efficiently than JPEG, saving space at similar quality; when sharing or transferring, photos may be converted to JPEG if the other device doesn't support HEIF. - PHILE WEB: HEIF or JPEG for iPhone photos? (2020, Japanese)
